Health Information: Making Every Patient’s Story Matter

By AHIMA Staff

In healthcare today, information is power. It informs decisions, connects care teams, shapes policy, and ultimately determines outcomes. But behind every data point is a professional who ensures that the information is accurate, secure, and meaningful.

Health information (HI) professionals have always been essential to the delivery of quality care—yet their impact often extends far beyond what’s visible. The new digital series Health Information: Making Every Patient’s Story Matter, created by the American Health Information Management Association® (AHIMA) in partnership with Content With Purpose (CWP), aims to bring that story to life.

Through powerful films, thought-provoking interviews, and real-world examples, the series celebrates the people and organizations transforming how health information is captured, connected, and used to improve health outcomes. It also reflects AHIMA’s mission to empower people to impact health®, showcasing how HI professionals’ expertise drives innovation and trust across healthcare systems worldwide.

A Series for Our Time

Healthcare is evolving faster than ever. New technologies, regulatory frameworks, and patient expectations are reshaping how care is delivered and measured. In this changing landscape, HI professionals stand at the intersection of data, care, and technology.

This series highlights that intersection — showing how data integrity, privacy, and interoperability empower clinicians, patients, and systems to achieve better results. It explores how health information management (HIM) professionals are leading in areas such as:

  • Clinical documentation integrity: Ensuring every patient’s record tells the full, accurate story.
  • Privacy and security: Safeguarding trust in an increasingly digital ecosystem.
  • Data analytics: Turning complex data into actionable insights that improve outcomes.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smart technologies: Leveraging innovation responsibly to expand patient access and system efficiency.
  • Education and certification: Preparing the next generation of HI leaders with the skills needed for a data-driven healthcare system.

Each film and interview is designed to inspire — offering a rare glimpse into the breadth and depth of the profession, from hospitals and universities to technology innovators and global partners.

Shaping the Conversation

AHIMA has long championed the value of HI professionals as leaders in healthcare. This series amplifies that advocacy by sharing stories of innovation and leadership that resonate with a broad audience—clinicians, policymakers, technology developers, educators, and patients.

Maria Caban Alizondo“Behind every patient record is a story, and health information professionals ensure those stories are accurate, secure, and accessible when they matter most,” says Maria Caban Alizondo, PhD, RHIT, FAHIMA, AHIMA President/Chair. “As the leader in health information, AHIMA champions the professionals and standards that protect patient trust and drive responsible use of data and technology. This series highlights our profession’s vital role in building smarter, more connected, and more equitable healthcare -- today and for the future.”

By positioning HI professionals as catalysts for innovation, Health Information: Making Every Patient’s Story Matter helps bridge the gap between technical expertise and public understanding. It reinforces that health information is not just about managing data—it’s about ensuring that information works for people.

What You’ll Find in the Series

The series opens with an Impact Showcase Film, offering a dynamic introduction to the role of health information in shaping a healthier, more connected world. It then dives deeper through a collection of Content Partner films, Expert Interviews, and a Case Study, each spotlighting a unique perspective on the profession’s contributions.

Viewers can expect stories such as:

  • Hospitals and health systems leveraging AI-powered analytics to improve documentation and reduce denials.
  • Educators preparing students to lead in an era of interoperability and digital transformation.
  • Technology innovators developing secure, integrated solutions to protect patient data and empower providers.
  • Public and private sector leaders collaborating to strengthen health data governance and access.

These stories don’t just inform; they inspire. They highlight how HI professionals lead with integrity, creativity, and collaboration to ensure that data drives better decisions, safer care, and stronger communities.

A Resource for Iinspiration and Advocacy

For AHIMA members and credentialed professionals, the series is more than a celebration, it’s a tool for visibility and influence. By sharing the films across networks, workplaces, and classrooms, members can help raise awareness of the profession’s value and encourage others to explore a career in health information.

The series also supports AHIMA’s broader advocacy efforts by engaging external audiences, demonstrating how the HI workforce contributes to a more efficient, equitable, and patient-centered healthcare system. Whether viewed by industry partners, policymakers, or the general public, each story underscores the same truth: trusted information transforms health.

Looking Ahead

As healthcare continues to evolve, AHIMA remains committed to advancing the knowledge, integrity, and innovation of the HI community. Health Information: Making Every Patient’s Story Matter is part of that ongoing mission — amplifying the voices of those shaping the future of healthcare through information.

This is more than a series of films. It’s a call to recognize, celebrate, and invest in the people behind the data —the professionals ensuring that every patient’s story matters.
