AHIMA Webinar Addresses COVID-19 Medical Record Documentation Challenges

  2. I am an infection preventionist and received the following question. What are the recommendations for obtaining a patient’s signature on a paper consent form while in an isolation room? Any information or guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

      For admitting consents, we have created an electronic template that nursing staff takes it to the patient’s room to sign on an iPad. This is when the patient is first getting admitted, usually from the ED. Once the patient is in isolation, if alert and able, the nursing staff takes the patient’s consents into the room to sign. If the patient is unable to sign, but can give a verbal, the nurse documents the reason on the consent. Staff is aware to disinfect and maintain proper precautions when coming into contact with documents that a COVID patient has touched.
