Membership Matters: A Reflection on the Power of Our Community

Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of attending multiple Component Association (CA) annual meetings alongside AHIMA leaders Cris Iaboni, Jennifer Mueller, and Dr. Jasmine Agnew. Each visit has reminded us just how central our CAs are to cultivating the health information community. The warm welcomes, meaningful conversations, and shared energy have stayed with me long after each trip.

What’s been most powerful is the chance to hear directly from you, because your feedback helps guide our work and decisions. These gatherings haven’t just helped me understand your day-to-day challenges and goals. They’ve also created opportunities for members’ voices to be heard and honored in a way that is personal and real.

Having this opportunity to travel, listen, and learn has meant a great deal to all of us. It’s deepened our commitment to supporting the relationships that make this community so strong.

More Than a Credential

People often join a professional association to earn a certification or grow their skills, but what keeps them connected runs much deeper. It’s the feeling of belonging. It’s the relationships formed, the support shared, and the common purpose that binds us. Being part of this community means having people you can turn to at every stage of your career.

At every CA meeting I’ve attended, I’ve witnessed so much kindness, hospitality, pride, and true collaboration. These are the qualities that define our members, and they are what make this community so special. I’ve also seen firsthand how our members are helping to advance the profession by mentoring new professionals, sharing knowledge, and helping prepare the next generation of health information leaders.

Looking Ahead with Gratitude and Confidence

As we approach the 100th anniversary of AHIMA, I’m feeling both grateful and excited. Grateful for the dedication of our members and the leadership that continues to guide us forward. Excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. This is a time to celebrate who we are and what we have built, but it’s also a time to imagine what comes next.

I believe that together, we will continue to grow, support one another, and make a lasting difference. Because when we come together as a community, we are not just building careers. We are empowering others to impact health®.
