From AHIMA, News, CEO's Message

Building the Future of Health Information

Sixty-two days. As I write this, I’ve logged 62 days as the CEO of AHIMA. I’ve spent much of my time talking with AHIMA staff, Board members, past AHIMA presidents, and others outside of AHIMA. It’s been such a tremendous learning experience, a master class really, as I have gained more understanding of both challenges and opportunities facing this nearly 100-year-old institution. I’m happy to report that after 62 days and many, many conversations, I remain as excited and optimistic as I was on the day I started in the role.

My conversations have crystallized, for me, four core strategic imperatives for AHIMA moving forward. Four guiding principles to direct our path: Education, Advocacy, Career Advancement, and Demonstrating the Value of Health Information Professionals. When someone asks, “What does AHIMA do?” I want the answer to be clear, concise, and compelling: We educate, we advocate, we elevate careers, and we demonstrate the value of health information to employers, strategic partners, and the public. The team at AHIMA will be using these four strategic imperatives, along with an established framework, to refresh and enhance our current strategic plan. By focusing on these four areas, I’m confident AHIMA will not only positively impact the careers of our members but also solidify our place as a driving force for positive change in healthcare. I cannot wait to share more about these imperatives and the initiatives that support each one in the near future.

To be effective with our strategy, we must continue to make operational improvements to our internal systems and processes. To that end, we’ve made a significant investment in our IT infrastructure as part of our 2026 operating budget. I want you to know that improving the member experience and building out the value of membership are our top priorities.

Last month, Thea Campbell, your President and Board Chair, made a commitment to you. “Together, we’ll continue shaping a professional home that drives growth, accountability, and trust.” I couldn’t agree more, and I’m excited to be working alongside so many passionate colleagues toward that important goal as we do our part to improve healthcare.
