IFHIMA Releases White Paper to Help HIM Professionals Navigate Global Privacy Trends

A new white paper from the International Federation of Health Information Management Associations (IFHIMA) discusses the challenges of managing the privacy of health information in an increasingly mobile, digital, data-oriented world with a global perspective. Included in this paper are recommended key actions and case studies from Australia, the European Union, India, Qatar, Republic of South Korea, and the United States.

The paper’s authors will be discussing the paper and international privacy matters at the 19th IFHIMA National Congress in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, being held November 17-21, 2019.

According to Lorraine Fernandes, RHIA, principal and founder of Fernandes Healthcare Insights, and president-elect of IFHIMA, the whitepaper should be able to assist anyone tasked with planning for increased data sharing while trying to manage healthcare privacy. She notes in a blog post that ministers or Department of Health staff, privacy and data governance consultants, vendors, and health systems should find it especially helpful.

The whitepaper discusses how several countries are approaching changes in the healthcare privacy landscape, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Through the paper, IFHIMA hopes to help health information management (HIM) professionals, policy makers, and regulators navigate the changing environment of health information by:

  • Guiding HIM professionals’ understanding of emerging global trends in privacy and to self-identify career path options when managing health information in all its forms and formats
  • Moving health policy stakeholders to have informed discussions and take action in the development of privacy practices with regard to sharing of health information.
