AHRQ Physician Jon White Named Acting Deputy at ONC
As part of the ongoing reshuffling of leadership at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), the agency has announced that it has named Jon White, MD, as the acting deputy national coordinator. White also is ONC’s acting chief medical officer, a post he was assigned to in October, Fierce Health IT reports. He will continue to serve in both posts, according to an internal memo from national coordinator Karen DeSalvo, MD, MPH, MSc.
White joins ONC from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality where he worked as director of the division for health IT. According to the memo, which was obtained by Fierce Health IT, White’s duties will include overseeing the day-to-day work of ONC, management of senior staff, and executive oversight for the activities of all ONC offices.
The appointment comes as the agency is grappling to fill vacancies in its management-level staff. DeSalvo was tapped to become a member of the Obama administration’s Ebola response team in October, and Jacob Reider, MD, ONC’s deputy national coordinator, left the agency in November. Additionally, Judy Murphy, RN, FACMI, FHIMSS, FAAN, left her role as chief nursing officer and director of the office of clinical quality and safety at ONC in October; Doug Fridsma, ONC’s chief scientist, left in early October; Joy Pritts stepped down as chief privacy officer in July; Lygeia Ricciardi, who served as director of the office of consumer eHealth, resigned in July.
According to DeSalvo’s memo, “[White’s] portfolio has encompassed hundreds of projects in 48 states, including research, demonstration and implementation projects on a wide variety of health IT programs and issues.”
