Survey Finds Healthcare Orgs have Big Plans for Digital Technologies

Patient experience, clinical outcomes, and customer relationships are among key driving factors for healthcare organizations undertaking technology adoption initiatives, according to a survey from Ernst and Young.

The Future of Health Survey, conducted in early 2018, asked questions to gain a better understanding of participants’ perception of digital technologies and the role they might play in improving healthcare. The Ernst and Young survey—which included 2,455 US consumers, 152 physicians, and 195 executives—also included questions about related strategic initiatives in the works.

The vast majority of participants surveyed (91 percent) are either planning to undertake a technology adoption initiative in the next 12 months or have already done so. Key driving factors for the technology initiatives included patient experience (70 percent), customer relationships (59 percent), and clinical outcomes (58 percent). Funding is a concern for about half of those who talked about undertaking tech initiatives.

According to Ernst and Young, key findings from the survey include:

  • Consumers are already comfortable with digital technologies in the healthcare space, and expect modern physician-patient interactions (56 percent of patients said they would use technology to interact with care providers, and 27 percent said they used personal activity trackers to track health- or exercise-related data in the past 12 months)
  • The majority of physicians agree that digital technologies contribute to population health and ultimately lower costs (68 percent of physicians said that at-home diagnostic testing will deliver better outcomes, and 67 percent said that smartphone apps that record health and fitness data will deliver better outcomes)
  • Americans are open to sharing health data despite the fact that they still have several concerns (74 percent said they would agree to share lifestyle information as a way to help physicians treat the population more comprehensively)
  • Analytics are seen as “the key to unlocking value in the new health ecosystem” (at 50 percent, leveraging analytics to inform performance improvements was the most-planned initiative for the next 12 months)
