Journal of AHIMA Wins National, Regional Excellence Awards

The Journal of AHIMA magazine and website have been recognized with several editorial and design excellence awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) and the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors (ASHPE).

The Journal website slideshow “Release of Information vs. ‘The Experts’” was issued the National Bronze Award for Best Photo Gallery/Slide Show by ASBPE during their awards banquet Thursday. The slideshow was also recognized with a Silver Award in the regional ASBPE awards slideshow category.

From an attorney that specialized in HIPAA law—and helped write the HIPAA legislation—to a former chief privacy officer at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, the slideshow profiles the personal experience of HIPAA experts who faced major hurdles in getting and using their health records. The piece shows it is not just uninformed patients who have trouble getting and using their vital health information, and illustrates the need to improve release of information processes in order to foster proper patient access.

In the ASHPE 2018 Awards Competition, the Journal of AHIMA magazine won the Gold Award for Best Opening Page/Spread: Computer Generated Category and the Bronze Award for Best Magazine Cover: Computer-Generated Category.

The opening page/spread that earned the award was the September 2017 “Money Troubles” article. Changing healthcare reimbursement models are causing a major shake-up of the physician and outpatient healthcare industry. Revisions in the way doctors get paid for their services, through things like pay for performance and the use of quality metrics to adjust payment, has led providers to more heavily rely on the accurate recording of documentation in the medical record and correct assignment of medical billing codes. These changes have been very frustrating and confusing for physicians, with improper medical coding causing many providers to lose money and get bogged down with unwanted administrative work. This design shows that frustration, with medical codes (codes that often are incorrectly assigned or misunderstood, according to health information management (HIM) professionals) tripping up providers and causing them to lose focus and money. The accompanying article discusses how HIM professionals can help doctors regain their balance, and offers a tutorial on the new reimbursement changes so that coding professionals can better assist physicians through these challenging times.

The cover that earned the award was the March 2017 Journal of AHIMA issue featuring the cover story “Making HIPAA Work for Consumers.” “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” This old proverb rings true for healthcare consumers and the release of their health information. With laws like HIPAA and the advent of patient portals, it has never been easier for consumers to access their personal health information. But in order to reap the many benefits that come with this information, many consumers first need instruction on how to use tools like HIPAA and portals to land their records. This is where HIM comes in. This cover illustration plays off that proverb, with the child representing the uninformed healthcare consumer, the fisherman representing the informed HIM teacher, and the fishing pole representing how use of the right tool, like HIPAA, will allow an individual to obtain their medical records. This was the cover image for the Journal of AHIMA’s “consumer engagement” issue, with the accompanying article discussing how HIM professionals can leverage HIPAA’s record access and privacy laws to educate patients on their right to collect and use their health information and records.

Each year ASHPE recognizes editorial excellence and achievement in the field of healthcare publishing and ASBPE honors excellence in the business, trade, and specialty press.
