MU Hardship Exception Application Deadline Extended to July 1

Eligible providers needing an EHR Incentive Program hardship exception now have until July 1 to send in an application, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced.

Eligible professionals who didn’t successfully attest to Medicare’s “meaningful use” EHR Incentive Program in 2014 will start to see reimbursement cuts starting January 1, 2016.

However, eligible professionals and hospitals who can prove that attesting presents a significant hardship may be eligible for a hardship exception.

“If approved, the hardship exception is valid for one payment year only,” according to the CMS website. “A new application must be submitted if the hardship continues for the following payment year.  In no case may a provider be granted an exception for more than five years.”

CMS has developed a hardship exception tool that helps eligible providers determine if they can avoid upcoming payment adjustments. Click here to use the tool, which is in the format of a flow chart.
