  1. I thought the video was very good. I didn’t know the map had all that information. How about some info on nurses moving into HIM? I am an LPN with over 30 years of experience and I will complete my 2 year degree for RHIT in the spring. I want to go on for my bachelors but don’t know how to figure out what path I want to take. Is there an interest inventory I can take? Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

  2. Hi Kari,

A nursing background can lead to roles in any of the six job families on the map. There are AHIMA members with LPNs in compliance, privacy, security, coding, data quality, consulting, auditing, just to name a few.

One way you can start is by finding a point on the map that interests you and matching the requirements and responsibilities in the detailed description.

There are also practice briefs and articles from the Journal of AHIMA that highlight some of those roles and give you a chance to match your strengths and interests to future opportunities. You can find those by going to ahima.org and clicking on the link to the HIM Body of Knowledge.

Also, a mentor might be a good source of insight and guidance for you. You can request to be matched with one by sending in this form: http://www.ahima.org/downloads/pdfs/membership/MX7293_MenteeFINAL.pdf
